December 12th, 2007

It has only been a few weeks since my last journal entry but I do have some appearances to share with you so I thought I would write another entry to keep you all up to date. It started on December 6th with my hometown Christmas Tree Lighting. Myself and my sister Laura, the reigning Miss Carbonear, headed down to the Town Hall to take part in the official lighting of the Town Hall. We were greeted by our Mayor, Sam Slade, and some other members of the special events committee. We were escorted into the Theater where we were treated to performances of Christmas carols performed by schools, bands and members of the community. After the performances we were all taken outside for the official lighting of the tree. This year the committee decided to light up all of the trees around the Town Hall and it was a truly remarkable sight. Once the tree was officially lit we headed back inside for hot chocolate. It was such a great feeling to be able to stop and speak with some of the children who performed that night (especially those from Davis Elementary) and I was very honored when they asked me to sign autographs for them.

The next night I headed up to Bay Roberts to take part in the Academy for Mathematics and Science Christmas Party. There I participated in a few games of glow bowling, and get to know a few of the students and staff of the Academy. I had such a great time at the party. Some of the students showed me how to bowl without putting the ball in the gutter and they were all very impressed that my sash glowed in the dark. When the party was over and parents were coming to pick up the kids I was again asked to sign a few autographs. ……I am still not quite used to that part of being Miss Newfoundland and Labrador but I love to be able to be seen as a role model for these young kids. It is an amazing feeling to know that they look up to me and what I do and that maybe, my year as Miss Newfoundland and Labrador will help them somehow. After leaving the party it was home to bed because the next day would be a busy one for me.

I awoke bright and early on December 8th to get ready for a full (and eventful) day of activities. First was the town of Victoria Christmas Parade. There was a very light snow fall so unfortunately the convertible that was scheduled to take both myself and Jillian Clarke, Miss Victoria Fire Queen, had to back out. So there me and Jillian were ready to go but with no vehicle. Most of you who know me, know that I am not one to let something like snow get in the way so Jillian and I spoke with the Fire Chief. After discussing our options, Jillian and I climbed aboard the top of the fire truck with a big fire blanket and we were all set to go. At 10 am we left Persalvic School Parking lot and made our way down the parade route, waving to the crowds gathered on the street. About 15 minutes into the parade the snow got heavier and heavier but Jillian and I just kept smiling and waving to the crowds, who at this point had gone into their houses and were looking at us through the windows. By the time we got to the end of the parade route Jillian and I were white and covered in snow but we didn’t let that stop us. The snow had stopped for the moment so we greeted some of the kids and the people who were gathered at the end of the route and helped Santa give out some goodie bags. Once I was finished in Victoria it was off to Spaniard’s Bay for their Christmas Parade, with of course, a quick stop at the house to change to some dry clothes. The weather cleared off quite nice on the drive up and by the time I got there it was sunny and nice out, although still a bit cold. Once there I met up with Caitlin, Miss Teen Trinity-Conception and the fire chief of the Spaniard’s Bay Fire Department. The Fire Chief informed me that, again, because of the weather of the previous few hours the car they had for me had canceled and they were at a loss of where to put me. Again I climbed aboard the big fire truck and was just happy to be able to take part in the parade. Unfortunately the weather was not my friend this day and about half of the way through the parade it started to pour. By the time the parade ended I was dripping wet but I still managed to have a great time! My advice for next years Miss Newfoundland and Labrador is to always take an umbrella, a snow suit and boots with you to all of your parades! Lol.. After I dried off from the weather Spaniard’s Bay it was off to Envy Hair Salon. Envy has been such a great sponsor to be so far and they offered to do my hair for the Carbonear Parade. I was thrilled! After my hair was finished I attended the Annual Handicap Association Christmas Party. I had such a great time at this party. I had the opportunity to get up and speak, help Santa with the presents and even got a present from Santa myself. But honestly the fun times and great stories come from the events like I had this day and it will definitely be a day that sticks out to me from my year as Miss Newfoundland and Labrador.

On December 9th I took part in my hometown Christmas Parade. I met the co-ordinator in the parking lot of Carbonear General Hospital, where the parade starts every year. Once there I was set up with my transportation, a beautiful horse drawn carriage driven by Mr. and Mrs. White, long time friends of mine. I was so happy to be able to ride with them. Once the carriage was put in our place in the lineup I went to greet some of the other participants. In my spare time I coach the Carbonear Collegiate Cheerleaders so first I went to check on them. I made sure that they had everything they needed and that the music was working and of course took some pictures with them. After that I went to see Miss Carbonear (Laura), both little Miss and Mr. Carbonear, Miss Victoria (Jillian) and Miss Central Avalon Achievement (Kristi). Once I had visited all of them I had to head back to my place in line for the start of the parade, but of course I stopped on the way back to take some pictures with the Shriners and Frosty. Once I got back to the carriage I had a little surprise waiting for me, right behind me in the parade was a beautiful Newfoundland Pony who wanted to get his picture taken with me. I couldn’t pass up this opportunity! After taking a few pictures it was time to climb aboard the carriage and start the parade. Unfortunately I didn’t have better luck with the weather. It was the sunniest day that we had had all year but it was freezing cold outside. We all bared the weather and got through the parade route and ended at the Carbonear Town Hall where it was time to go inside and give out awards. This was a great opportunity to grab a few more photos and I got to take some great photos with other participants in the parade, Laura, Kristi and Little Miss Summer Holidays.

Yesterday I traveled to NTV in St. John’s for the taping of my Christmas Public Service Announcement. It was such a great opportunity for me. I was able to head into NTV and tape a message on Drinking and Driving, which we all know is still a big problem in our province and country, so it was great for me to be able to get out and give out such an important message.

“Hi, I'm Sabrina Jenkins, Miss Newfoundland & Labrador 2007-2008. With all the celebrating you do over the holidays, it's wise to exercise a strong measure of safety. Let's Keep the Holidays Safe and Happy... and be sure to share this message with those you love: Please don't drink and drive!”

Stay tuned from December 17th to December 31st on NTV to hear my PSA! Please keep checking the website for updates on my appearances, journals and of course pictures of the events! And don’t forget if you see me at an event please come up to me and introduce yourself, I would love continue to meet as many people as possible this year! Talk to you all soon!

Love Always,

Sabrina Jenkins

December 3, 2007

It hasn’t been too long since my last journal entry but I do have a few appearances to update with. It all started on November 25th with a trip to the Hair Force for Hair and Make-up. The ladies at the Hair Force did a wonderful job with everything and I absolutely loved my hair. After leaving the Hair Force it was off to NTV to catch my ride. From there it was off to the St. John’s Downtown Christmas Parade. The parade was so much more than I expected! I had such a wonderful time. It was my very first parade of the Christmas season and I have to say I wasn’t disappointed in the least. A lot of people turned out as they do every year to watch this year’s parade. It was so much fun to watch the children while I went by. One little boy even called me “your highness” – it was quite priceless! I was even fortunately to see some people that I knew on the side of the road! It was a very good day for me and so much fun!

The day after I woke up to a very wonderful surprise – I woke up to find myself on the cover of the Newfoundland Herald! I was absolutely thrilled; especially since it turned out that I was on the cover for my birthday! I got a lot of great feedback about my article and pictures and I want to thank everyone for their wonderful comments! I truly appreciate it! I want to thank everyone who bought one! I couldn’t believe that the stores around here sold out of them so fast! It was such an amazing feeling to be asked to sign them too. For those of you who live away and didn’t get to see it and have asked me about it, I will try to get a copy online for you!

On November 27 I traveled to St. John’s to judge the Calendar Contest for Workplace Health and Safety Compensation Commission. It was such a hard decision but I choose 12 different entries from children between the ages of 5 and 12. This calendar will be great! Each month has a drawing that demonstrates the importance of being safe in everything you do. A wonderful idea and a great way to teach children ways of keeping safe!

November 29 brought me to Bay Robert for the Opening of the Festival of Lights! The town made a new record this year with over 25, 000 lights for their festival. It was such an amazing site. Caitlin, Miss Teen Trinity-Conception and I were fortunate enough to speak to everyone during the opening and get a lot of pictures taken with members of the festival, performers and of course some of the light displays. After the festival was over my family brought me out for a nice birthday dinner to warm up and it was the great ending to wonderful event!

On December 1st my day started out at 9 am with the Harbour Grace Christmas Parade. The parade started at the town Fire Hall and went around the town. I had such a great ride! I traveled in a horse and carriage for the whole parade and it was soooo beautiful. Caitlin, Miss Teen Trinity-Conception, Kristi, Miss Central Avalon Achievement, Laura, Miss Carbonear and Jillian, Miss Victoria all joined me at the parade. After the parade was over it was back to the Fire Hall to give out the awards and warm up with a bit of hot chocolate.

That night it was off the Harbour Grace RCMP detachment for the Children’s Wish Foundation Tree Lighting and a tour of the RCMP Headquarters. Kristi Bourne and I participated in the tree lighting with the members of the Wish Foundation, the RCMP and members of the community. We sang Christmas Carols, lit the Wish Foundation tree and took some pictures, then we headed inside to cut the cake. While inside I took a lot of photos with the members of the Wish Foundation, the Wish Bear, Winnie the Pooh, Frosty and the Youth Crime Prevention team. When that part of the night was done Kristi and I were given the grand tour of the RCMP detachment. We were escorted downstairs to the cells and told about some of the things that happened down there. The officers locked us in a cell for a few minutes to show us what it was like to be in the cell and they also took some mug shots of us. It was a very interesting tour for both me and Kristi. I want to send a special thank you out to the officers who took us on this tour. We had such a great time!

The next night I traveled to Bay Roberts to participate in the Children’s Wish Foundation Tree Lighting in that community. This time I was privileged to be able to take part with Caitlin Noseworthy, the reigning Miss Teen Trinity-Conception. Caitlin and I participated in the opening ceremonies, the lighting of the tree and of course some Christmas carols. Afterwards we were treated to some cake and hot chocolate to warm ourselves up. It was a very cold night but it was great to see the number of people who turned out to support such a great cause (on both nights). The Children’s Wish Foundation is a very dear charity to me and I was so happy to be able to be a part of both of these tree lightings this year. I want to thank Diane Butt of the CBN Chapter of the Children’s Wish Foundation for allowing me to take part in this event!

That’s all for now! Please keep checking the website for updates on my appearances, journals and of course pictures of the events! And don’t forget if you see me at an event please come up to me and introduce yourself, I would love continue to meet as many people as possible this year! Talk to you all soon!

November 24, 2007

It has been a little while since my last entry but since then I have done some great appearances. It started on Remembrance Day where I was invited to the Royal Canadian Legion in Carbonear to participate in the Remembrance Day Ceremonies. The weather didn’t co-operate that day but the Ceremonies went ahead anyway, they were just moved inside the Legion. It was a wonderful Ceremony and was a great way to get together to remember the men and women who fought and are still fighting for our Country. I was honored to be introduced to some of the veterans and their families.

The following weekend it started on Friday November 16 with the Shriner’s Television Auction. I was happy to go and help out with the Auction by answering the phones and taking pledges. On November 17, I had the opportunity to meet and thank some of those veterans at the Legions Remembrance Banquet and Dance. Some of the stories that they have are just incredible and it really made me proud to be from a country such as Canada.

The next day I traveled to St. John’s with Kristi Bourne, Miss Central Avalon Achievement, to participate in the Jingle Bell walk for Arthritis. We had so much fun. When we first arrived we got our first taste of Christmas! The hall was decorated with presents and bells, there was even a Christmas tree set up in the corner. We even got to dress up a little with reindeer antlers. First we helped with registration and then it was time to warm up and stretch. After warming up we started the walk around Quidi Vidi lake, adults, children, babies and dogs all joined in the hike around the lake. Thankfully the weather co-operated and it was pretty exhilarating. After the walk we were treated to free massages from the physiotherapists who were stationed inside the building to help relax everyone once the walk was finished. Then Kristi and I had some wonderful photo’s taken with some of the children who participated. Three children in particular helped make my day – a set of twins, Melissa and Mark, who won an award for the best costume as they were dressed like Santa and Mrs. Claus and Olivia, a little miracle with such an amazing story. These children put such a smile on my face that day. It is definitely something I will never forget. Kristi and I ended our day by getting pictures taken with the volunteers who helped make the walk such a success.

On November 21st I traveled to town to pick up some of my prizes. My first stop was to Abishot in Mount Pearl. There I got to try on my brand new leather shrug. The staff was so great and I had a great time there! They even let me take a picture with them. Once I left Abishot it was over to Print Three downtown to pick up my autograph cards. This was very exciting for me as I couldn’t wait to see what they had done with them! Once I got them I was soooo impressed by them. After leaving Print three it was off to Always in Vogue to get fitted for the fur coat for the St. John’s Downtown Christmas Parade. The staff at Always in Vogue were so great and within a few minutes they had an amazing coat all picked out for me! It was such a wonderful visit!

On November 22nd I participated in the VOCM Happy Tree Opening at the Avalon Mall. Once I arrived I was met by Kristi Bourne, Miss Central Avalon Achievement and the winner of the VOCM Charitable Activity Award, and Danielle Seward, Miss Teen NL. We started off the evening by reading Christmas stories to the Children who were awaiting the awakening of Happy. The Children were so excited by the stories and gathered around to listen. After we read the stories I was asked to get some pictures taken and to sign some autographs. This was especially exciting to me as it was the first time I got to use my new autograph cards! This was one of my favorite appearances so far because I love working and playing with the children, they give you so much happiness and hope for everything with their cheerful attitudes. I absolutely loved it.

Today I was invited to take part in the Open House for the brand new Youth Employment Center here in Carbonear. This was another exciting appearance for me. I, along with Kristi Bourne, Miss Central Avalon Achievement, Caitlin Noseworthy, Miss Teen Trinity-Conception, Jamie Korab, and some of the members of the Cee Bees Hockey Team spent a few hours with the staff at the opening. I was so glad to take part in this Open House. I was even lucky enough to get to wear Jamie’s Olympic Curling Gold Medal. It was so much fun and I know that this Youth Employment Center will do such wonders for the Youth of Carbonear and the surrounding area.

That’s all for now! Please keep checking the website for updates on my appearances, journals and of course pictures of the events! And don’t forget if you see me at an event please come up to me and introduce yourself, I would love to meet as many people as possible this year! Talk to you all soon!

November 6, 2007

Hello everyone! Since my last journal entry I have had many wonderful appearances that I had to write another journal entry about them all.

It started on October 29th at the Civic Center in Carbonear where I participated in the Mayors Walk (Heart and Stroke Foundation) in Memory of the late Claude Garland, Mayor of Carbonear. This was a very emotional appearance for me as Mr. Garland was a very dear friend of mine. A lot of people turned out to walk in his memory and it was a great night for it. Mr. Garland was a person in my life who helped me become who I am today by believing in me and the things I did. I am very grateful to have had him in my life and I was very honored to be able to participate and raise money for this walk in his memory. NTV was also there to tape the walk and speak about Mr. Garland and his life. It was a very moving appearance for me.

On Halloween I traveled to St. John's to the Janeway Children's Hospital for their Trick-or-Treat party. I was able to go around to the many floors with the children and collect candy for those children who couldn't get out to do it. After receiving the candy from the nursing stations the children proceeded to "The Ship" where they had a Halloween party with music, candy and drinks. It was a very fun appearance for me and I am very glad to have been able to get out to the Janeway for Halloween.

The next weekend turned out to be a very busy one for me! On November 2nd at 9am I boarded the DRL Coachlines bus and traveled all the way to Central NL for the Triton Volunteer Fire Department Telethon. The first thing that I was given was a grand tour of Robert's Arm, Triton and Brighton from Bram, a resident of Triton. After touring the towns I was brought right to the fire station to meet the Triton Volunteer Fire Department Members. Even though it was late the fireman were generous enough to give me a tour of the fire station and even take pictures. I was very happy that night to be joined by Sherylynn Butt from Provincial Airlines, a previous Miss Newfoundland and Labrador (2003) and Miss Canada Galaxy (2006).

The next morning Sherylynn and I went back to the fire station to get ready for the run-through of the telethon, but the members of the Fire Department had different plans for us. First we met up with Shane Budgell - the organizer of the telethon. Then we were shown the brand new fire truck that the Department had bought in 2005. We were able to take pictures in the Provincial Airlines jackets with the new truck and I was completely beside myself...but that wasn't the best part. After those pictures were taken one of the members brought out the Fireman's Uniform (which Sherry and I were told was called "Bunker Gear"). So to make my day so much better I was allowed to put on the bunker gear and take lots of pictures. The fireman had a great time and they decided that I should take as many pictures as possible with all of the gear they had: oxygen masks, the saw and yes..even the Jaws of Life. I was able to get into the truck and test it out some of the gears in the back. What a great time it was! I was so happy to be able to interact with the fireman and get to know them well. It put a whole different perspective on firefighting for me to actually get into the Bunker Gear and see what they have to put on each and every time duty calls them. After that was done Sherry and I were taken out in the fire truck for a drive around the community. It was our duty to make announcements and remind the residents about the telethon taking place that night. After that it was back to the Fire Station for a run through. There we were met by Sabrina Fitzpatrick, Miss Teen Canada Scholarship.

After the run through we changed and went to PJ's for a meet and greet with the fireman and some of the people involved in the telethon. It was there that I met one of the most amazing 10 year olds I will ever meet - Dante Hiscock. Dante is a gospel singer and has the voice of an angel. At the age of 10 he has already been nominated for three awards, including an East Coast Music Award. Talk about amazing. At PJ's I was also able to take many pictures with different people and the staff was generous enough to allow me to take photos with some of the hockey memorabilia.

That night brought the telethon. From 6pm until 9 pm we were on television trying to raise money for the fire department for new Bunker Gear. Shane, Shery and I were in one part of the studio and Sabrina and some of the other fireman were in another part receiving the donations and helping set up the performers. We took turns going back and forth between the sets promoting the fire department, local talent and of course answering the phones and taking pledges. I had a blast at this event and I am so pleased that I got to partake in it. I want to send out a few special thanks: Thank you to the town of Triton, the Triton Volunteer Fire Department, Shane, Bram, and a very special thank you to DRL Coachlines. This appearance was so amazing for me and I can't wait to travel to Central NL again this year!

Just yesterday I did my interview with The Newfoundland Herald. It was so much fun to do and I had a great time. I can not wait to see it on the stands...so keep watching for it!!!!

Love Always,

Hello everyone! It hasn't been too long since my last journal entry but I have done a few more appearances since then so I wanted to write another one to keep everyone updated with what I am doing. It started on October 20th with a wonderful tour of the VOCM studios on Kenmount Road in St, John's. What a treat!!! Jay Taylor of CHVO (in Carbonear) met me at the front door and we started the tour in Carbonear. Yes that is right, we started in Carbonear - ok well it was really the office that broadcasts CHVO to Carbonear. From there he showed me the weather room, the room where open line is done and then brought me into the VOCM studio where I got some great pictures taken and got shown how to use the equipment while VOCM was live. It was so much fun learning how everything works. But that wasn't all! While I was there I also got to see the offices of 99.1, K-Rock, Radio Newfoundland and Radio Labrador. Jay also found a spot on the 99.1 Hits FM wall for me to sign..right underneath Kim Stockwood! If that wasn't enough, I got treated to a very interesting time after that - I was brought into The Shed. Yes, that is right The Shed with Big Tom and to my surprise, they were on air and I got to meet Big Tom! Just when I thought my day couldn't get any better, Tom invited me on to the radio with him. Here I was in the Shed and going on air with Big Tom, he even let me request a song - which I dedicated to my dad!

After my wonderful tour it was over the Arts and Culture Center for the 18th Annual International Women's Film Festival. Here I got to see videos from many inspirational filmmakers and even a documentary entitled "Forgiveness: Stories For Our Time" which was absolutely amazing. The people who put this show together did such an amazing job and I hope that there are many more festivals to look forward to.

The next morning started out down at Identity Hair Salon, one of the hair sponsors for the Miss Newfoundland and Labrador Pageant. This was to be a really exciting day - I was there to get my hair and make up ready for my Official Photoshoot as Miss Newfoundland and Labrador. Krista did such an amazing job on my hair and make-up and made me look great for my photoshoot. From there it was off to the Studio. Upon my arrival I was greeted by Kim Goodyear and Jennifer Gilliard, my photographers. The first part of the photoshoot took place in the studio where we took some great shots and had a really big laugh! Kim and Jennifer are so much fun to work with and we had a great time. After the studio shots we went over to Park House and took some more shots. These ones were so much fun, I got to use the staircase and the couch to take some amazing shots, although it was very hard this time to get the more serious shots as I found that I was laughing so hard at Kim and Jennifer's jokes. After they had gotten the shots inside we realized that the weather had cleared off a bit and that we could go and get a few shots done in the park right next door. These ones turned out to be my favorite because not only was I getting some beautiful shots done but I also got to act a bit like a kid and play on the swing. It turned out to be a wonderful day and I couldn't wait to see how all of the photos had turned out. Thank you so much to Krista from Identity Hair Salon for the beautiful hair and make-up and thank you to Kim and Jennifer, the photoshoot was so much fun and the pictures turned out amazing (more photoshoot shots will be added in another blog message!).

On Thursday October 25th, I took part in the 3rd Anniversary celebrations of Envy Hair Studio, another one of the Miss Newfoundland and Labrador Hair sponsors. This event was great! I enjoyed speaking with the ladies at the studio as well as some of the customers and friends. Congratulations ladies on your 3rd year and I will be seeing you all soon!!!

That night I went back to my old High School, Carbonear Collegiate, where I took part in the opening ceremonies of the Provincial Student Leadership Conference. Hundreds of students from schools across the province traveled to Carbonear to take place in the weekend's events. From classes on learning how to dance the fox trot to learning how to blow bubbles, the students partook in a weekend of amazing adventures. I met so many young students and I was very honored to have been able to take part.

On Saturday October 27th, I traveled to Upper Island Cove to attend the Upper Island Cove Fireman's Ball. This was a great function. I got to meet so many people that I didn't know and even a few that I had met previously. I was asked to say a few words to the firefighters and I was very and truly honored to be able to get up and speak directly to them. Thank you so much for inviting me to share in this event with you!

I am having such an amazing and wonderful time as Miss Newfoundland and Labrador and I truly enjoy all of the appearances I have done so far. I can't wait until the next ones. Please keep checking the website for updates on my appearances, journals and of course pictures of the events! And don't forget if you see me at an event please come up to me and introduce yourself, I would love to meet as many people as possible this year! Talk to you all soon!

Love Always,

October 16, 2007

It hasn't been very long since my last entry but I am going to try to keep as up to date as I can. Since my last entry I have done three appearances, all of which were excellent!

On October 12, 2007 I traveled to the Marine Institute in St. John's for the Ocean Net Youth and the Oceans Conference. Fighting Global Meltdown was this year's topic and was it even interesting! I learned a whole lot from this conference about Global Warming and the effects a lot of stuff has on the earth. We were treated to very cool fire juggling demonstration, guest speakers, slideshows and a youth forum with a question and answer period. We heard speeches from Beni Malone (who gave us the jugging demonstration), Terry Harvey (of the Canadian Coast Guard), Dr. Bill Montevecchi (a professor from Marine Institute), Bruce Peters (owner of the Tourist Hospitality B & B), and Justin Deering (the Provincial Director of the NL Environmental Action Team). I was also invited to speak to the youth attending the conference and it was truly exhilarating! Not only did I learn a lot from the speakers but I learned a lot from the youth just by speaking with them throughout the conference. It was a very good learning experience for me! Close to the end of the conference there were many awards given out. I just want to congratulate some of the award winners here: The Youth Environmental Stewardship Award for outstanding Environmental work went to Holy Trinity High School and 2nd place went to Mary's Town Central High School. The Eco-Champ Award Winner for this year went to St. Catherine's Academy in Mount Carmel. Recognition for this award went to Larkhall Academy and Balbo Elementary. There was also an Essay Award given out for the best essay written and this award went to Luke Rose of Balbo Elementary. Congratulations to all of the schools! You all did a great job! I have to also congratulate the entire Ocean Net Committee. This conference was well put together and well thought through. It was great to attend and I am sure that a lot of work went it to it. I have to say it was well worth it!!!! I am on my way to that 10 point lifestyle and I will make sure that Justin knows that I will be using "swirly bulbs" from now on! Lol!

On Saturday October 13, my day started off at Envy Hair Studio. The ladies at Envy are always a great laugh when I go down and they always do a great job!! It was so fun there that the time went so quickly and I didn't realize how long I was there! Thanks ladies I loved my hair! After envy it was off to Sooters in Carbonear for a photo shoot. Sooters donated a photo shoot as one of my prizes. It was so much fun! We took a whole lot of great shots and I can't wait to see the pictures. Thank you so much!!!

That night it was off to the 35th annual Carbonear Fireman's Ball. This function was very special to be for many reasons. Carbonear is my hometown and it is always great to do functions at home. Also in 2001 I was crowned Miss Carbonear 2001-2002 and the Carbonear Fireman's Ball was my first official function as Miss Carbonear. It was an amazing feeling to be able to go back after all these years. It was also special to me because this year my little sister, Laura, was crowned Miss Carbonear 2007-2008 and this was the first function that I was able to share with her. So the night started off with myself, Laura and Caitlin (Miss Tee Trinity-Conception 2007-2008) meeting and greeting many people. We had the opportunity to meet with the Mayor of Carbonear, Sam Slade, the MP for the Avalon Riding, Fabian Manning, The President for the PC Party, John Babb, and many of the Carbonear Volunteer Firefighters. I was honored to be able to speak and to let the firefighters know just how proud I was to be from such a town with people like them giving up their time to be volunteer firefighters. When the dinner, the speeches and awards were given out we were able to get a huge group photo with the firefighters. It was such a wonderful night! Thank you so much to the Carbonear Volunteer Fire Department for inviting me to share in such a wonderful event!

On Sunday October 14th I traveled to Bay Roberts for the Trinity Conception Placentia Health Foundation Telethon. This was a very exciting event for me as it was for such a great cause. I went up to the Persona Building in Bay Roberts and at 1pm myself and Danielle Butt were on tv. We got to read pledges, sponsors and help to display cheques from different organizations. Later in the afternoon myself, Kristi Bourne (Miss Central Avalon Achievement) and Caitlin Noseworthy (Miss Teen Trinity-Conception) were also able to go on television and speak. This year was also really special for the telethon because it was the first year that they were live on the internet. After that we were put on the phones to take pledges. I got to meet a whole lot of people at this event and it was so fun. I met Danielle Butt from NTV, Rod Stockley from Coast 101.1, and Glen Littlejohn the mayor of Bay Roberts. I also got to speak with some people that I had already previously met like Aiden Hibbs from CHVO, Fabian Manning, Tom Hedderson, Kathy Stacey from Persona and Don Coombs the mayor of Harbour Grace. The telethon was a great success one who got to reveal the final total live on Persona television. I want to congratulate and they raised a lot of money. They raised over $316,000.00 and I was the luckytulate the organizing committee for a job well done. This year's telethon was truly amazing and it has definitely grown over the last few years! Congratulations on the success of this year and I hope that each year it gets bigger and better!!! I look forward to watching it grow and I know I will be back to volunteer for next year!
